January 2019
Happy New Year!
After such a great and busy 2018, you might think that January will be a slow month. Hardly!
Starting with the regular [January 10] meeting on Thursday and a greatly-anticipated presentation by Tim Duffy, K3LR, with DX Engineering, we’ll follow up with Radio Play Day on Saturday. The regular meeting has moved back to the Hebron Branch library. Play Day will be at the Josey Ranch library.
Hams Enjoy Fajita-Fest

Over sixty hams, family and friends gathered at The Victoria Restaurant in Farmers Branch for MARS’ annual Christmas Party. Fajitas were the main attraction as well as an array of fabulous door prizes. Dave Lane, N5GDL, took home this year’s raffle prize: an exciting Icom all-mode, HF to 440, IC-7100.
The restaurant was a new venue for us and we expect to return next year. Thanks go to the party organizers, David Gilpin, K5GIL, Darrell Crimmins, KG5E, Steve Darrah, KD5YPB, Annie Ackors-Bruce, KG5OVU, Liz Brown, K5EMB, Andy Parcel, KE5KOF, Kevin Grantham, N5KRG, and all the rest for a delightful evening of fun and fellowship. Irving ARC Grant Project on the Air
Earlier last spring, MARS was one of several clubs awarded a $1,000 grant from the Irving Amateur Radio Club. The purpose of the grant was to help fund infrastructure improvements that benefit amateur radio and their communities.
MARS proposed that we install a Winlink gateway to serve southeast Denton and northwest Dallas counties, and put up three AREDN™ nodes. We’re pleased to report that the project is complete.

During Thanksgiving, we went to visit my wife’s cousin at a small town of around 4,000, Walnut Ridge, Arkansas—about 20 miles north of Jonesboro. They have a small Army Air Force museum on the grounds of a World War II Army Air Force Base. My dear wife won’t let me fill the car up with my “portable” ham stuff, “go figure.” So, to kill some time, I visit this museum when I am in town. For this visit we decided to see what neat communication items they had on display. But before I get into what I found, a little about the Army Air Base that was there.
