AREDN Revealed
January 12, 2017
At the January meeting, Paul Newman, KA5TYW, and Dale Finley, KB5NFT, explained the ins and outs of Amateur Radio Emergency Data Networks (AREDN). The short description is that it is MESH network using frequencies assigned to amateur radio to create a data network independent of the internet. The system is aimed at providing another means to connect in case of emergency.
Paul explained how it works and Dale showed several portable nodes he’s assembled. You may download an audio file of Paul’s presentation here, and you can find out more about AREDN by visiting https://www.arednmesh.org/
Bill Krueger, AE5BK/SK
Remembering Bill
As many of you may know, Bill Krueger was seriously injured when he fell during a Mediterranean cruise last October. After undergoing emergency surgery, Bill remained in a coma. On January 12, 2017, he suffered a heart attack and doctors were unable to resuscitate him.
In lieu of flowers, Bill’s family has asked that donations be made to your local amateur radio club or to the Circle Ten Council of the Boy Scouts of America. MARS offers our heartfelt condolences to his friends and family.
Many hams have shared their memories. If you would like to add your thoughts, please write to webmaster@KB5A.org.
